Wharf Historic Infrastructure and
Flood Mitigation
Landis Park to Byers Street
Meet at intersection of
Church Street and Middlebrook Avenue
Rebecca Joyce, Program Manager for the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission will join HSF board member Sharon Angle to lead our walk and discussion. Rebecca and Sharon have extensive experience in flood mitigation and urban planning. Sharon served as the City’s emergency manager during the August 2003 flood in downtown Staunton and subsequent mitigation project.
The Wharf has experienced many floods with one of the most destructive occuring in 1896. Today the creek beds run under the asphalt parking and Byers Street. Adjacent are the historic Wharf warehouses adaptively reused as shops, office space, and residences. Rebecca and Sharon will lead a discussion outlining flood challenges and mitigation of flood damage.
The walking tour will begin at Landis Park along Middlebrook Avenue and lead to the Wharf buildings along Byers Street.
Free and open to the public.
